Disembarkation Day

D-Day

Aloha kākou. D-Day has always been known as the day when the Allied Nations began the invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France. I’ve never known what the meaning of “D” in D-Day meant. According to a “Time Magazine” article written by Kat Moon, the French referred the name “D” meaning the amphibious assault “disembarkation,” or “debarkation” day. While General Eisenhower simply referred to the day as “Day” or Decision-Day. We refer to “D-Day” as the beginning of the end of WWII and the Nazis Reich.

The Time article quotes from Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins by Robert Hendrickson:

The French maintain the D means “disembarkation,” still others say “debarkation,” and the more poetic insist D-Day is short for “day of decision.” When someone wrote to General Eisenhower in 1964 asking for an explanation, his executive assistant Brigadier General Robert Schultz answered: “General Eisenhower asked me to respond to your letter. Be advised that any amphibious operation has a ‘departed date’; therefore, the shortened term ‘D-Day’ is used.”

I had two grandfathers that served in World War II. One served in the Great War before. The war to end all wars but didn’t. Both grandfathers survived the horrors of war and lived out the rest of their lives in peace. They never spoke about the war, but their wounds were clearly visible. Missing arms and legs replaced with prosthetics. Their eyes spoke in silence of what could never be unlived in. Never forgotten and always tormented memories. I have seen this look before from others that lived through the terrors of war. From refugees that survived war. I’ve seen this look on the faces of heroes that have served this nation in war.

My own father that served in Vietnam. An uncle in the Korean War. A cousin that returned from the Gulf War. Friends that served this nation in war. What sacrifices they gave up to save us all from evil. I cannot imagine what it must feel like, nor will I attempt to. But the wars continue on without end. By people that don’t have to be at the front lines putting their lives at risk. They sit quietly thousands of miles away from the battlefield pushing lines on the map. Here we are again on the precipice of a third world war. It seems we are a species designed for war.

Disembarkation Day is why we fight for freedom and liberty. The war against tyranny is why we fight. The fight for the blessings that God has bestowed upon us. That two-sided coin is the cost of preparing for peace or war. It depends which side of the coin is of more value. In my humble opinion.
