Eat Rice

graduation

Aloha kākou and Happy Aloha Friday. It’s graduation season here in the Hawaiian Islands. Which means the schools are closed for the summer and there’s less traffic on the roads. Less kids on the roads when school gets out. Which makes it safer for everyone.

The Kea’au public school’s buildings are all in the same location. Elementary, middle, and high school buildings are all sprawled along Old Volcano Road. Parents line the side of the road in their vehicles every day before school lets out to pick up their kids. There are buses that take kids to the surrounding subdivisions. It’s briefly congested for that period of time in the morning and midafternoon. The rest of the day is serene.

Comedian entertainer, Frank De Lima wrote this commencement speech back in 1999, “Eat Rice.” One of the best graduation dissertations when “Facing Future.” The name of the second album by Hawaiian singer Israel Kamakawiwoʻole, released in 1993.

I’ve heard a lot of commencement speeches at past graduations over the years. Some were awe inspiring, funny, thoughtful, and most others were just plain liberal leftist mush. I hate leftist mush monologues. It’s like serving cold congee. It’s neither comforting nor relatable. Soliloquies of someone’s sour personal anecdotes isn’t inspiriting. Where do universities find these losers? UGH!

In the evening, the graduation parties start. Family get togethers, food, games, stories, music, and fireworks. Then the real work happens next. Finding a job, earning a living, starting a life, and a family. It’s getting tougher every year in Hawai’i. Many young people have left the state for opportunities on the mainland. Keeping in mind that many states have the same problem as Hawai’i does. Housing, jobs, and the cost of living is too prohibitive to live and raise a family.

Have a good weekend. Get out there and support President Trump. Flag Waving, Wearing Trump Gear. Letters to the Editor. When anyone says Trump is a convicted felon, tell them, “So What?” Everyone knows this was a shameful trial and an illegal conviction. It’s political interference and it won’t change support for Trump. Anyway, that’s my bowl of rice for today.
