Columbus

Aloha kākou, and benvenuto. Happy Columbus Day. Columbus Day, which is on the second Monday of October, remembers Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. It became a Federal holiday in 1937. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Although Columbus never actually landed on the Americas continents but the Bahamas, he is credited as the first explorer to discover the west.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella aboard the ships the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. That’s how I will always remember him and his accomplishments will never be erased.

Columbus intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia. Instead, on October 12, 1492, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings established colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century. Columbus sighted Cuba and believed it was mainland China. In December the expedition found Hispaniola, which he thought might be Japan. There, he established Spain’s first colony in the Americas with 39 of his men.

Neapolitan is a Romance language of the Italo-Dalmatian group spoken across much of Southern Italy, except for southern Calabria, southern Apulia, and Sicily, and spoken in a small part of central Italy. It is named after the Kingdom of Naples that once covered most of the area, of which the city of Naples was the capital.

Pizza

I love all sorts of foods and Italian is at the top of the list. There is a saying that the Chinese invented the noodle and the Italians perfected it. With such foods as spaghettis and various pastas. Who could leave out pizzas. Who eats pizza with a knife and fork anyway?

Italian wines are some of the best in the world. Various regions in Italy produce some of the most unique wines that are paired with different foods of the region. I particularly like the wines from the Lazio region where Sangiovese varieties are found near the Eternal City of Rome. Each wine region is equally as great.

I also love Italian fashion. Everything from the shoes to the hats, the suits and ties are some of the more comfortable fabrics I’ve ever owned. The look is impeccable and classic as are works of Italian art.

Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat – Fortune Favors The Brave

Even Christopher Columbus dressed with impeccable fashion. In my view Christopher Columbus will always be a hero. A brave explorer and a deeply religious man, a true Christian. It is very important that the adventures of Christopher Columbus be taught in schools and honored with statues and parades. Celebrated with food and wine with friends and family. This was the beginning of two human species meeting for the first time in centuries. That was the beginning of one world and one people. That is the reason why I celebrate Columbus Day.
