On Monday 6:14 AM HST, Hawai’i Civil Defense released this message: “The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory has updated Kīlauea volcano’s alert status to WARNING.” This warning means the following: There are no threats to any communities from lava. Some areas may experience elevated gases, take precautions if you are sensitive to volcanic gases. All activity is within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

USGS conducted an aerial flight over Kīlauea at 6 AM this morning. USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists observed fissures systems that opened on the upper portion of the Southwest Rift Zone. Approximately half a mile (about 1 km) in length, only the southwest portion of the system was active by daylight. USGS video. Posted by the Hawai’i Tribune Herald.

Volcano gases known as VOG are the measure of sulfur dioxide SO2-4 pollutants in the air. Green is zero, yellow is 0.5%, and orange is 1%, particulates in the air. The gray shows the presence of volcanic aerosols in the air. The scale can reach 5% which is hazardous to humans. The sulfur plume is reaching all the Hawaiian Islands. The heaviest concentrations are on the leeward side of the Big Island.

Here’s the planet’s contribution to Global Warming, Climate Crisis, and Climate Change. More than any fossil fuels can generate in 1000 years in just minutes. More than any coal fired electrical power plant can produce in a lifetime. More pollution than Congress can spew in any daily session. Now that’s a lot of HotAir.

Pelehonuamea Ala, the Volcano Goddess Pele awakens, and she’s coming to visit. We can’t get in her way. We can only pray she passes peacefully. We built our homes on the slopes of Mauna Loa where Kīlauea resides. Sometimes there’s lava in the living room and other times there’s a new lava rock garden left behind Pele’s passing. Pele is the ultimate landlord. We are just renting the land under her supervision.
