RainbowFalls

Aloha kākou. This is Rainbow Falls in Hilo, Hawai’i. When we get heavy rains Rainbow Falls offers specular views. Located at the top of Waianuenue avenue in Hilo near the hospital just off a little road that takes you to Wailuku State park. A great viewing area where you can watch the falls. Since there’s little tourism these days, I got the park all to myself.

Further up Waianuenue avenue is Boiling Pots. The water comes streaming down from Mauna Loa from several streams that combine together to form Wailuku river that continues past the singing bridge and into Hilo Bay. There are many such waterfalls that hug East Hawai’i shoreline.

It’s been an incredibly wet and rainy 2021 year. Past years have been a mix of rain and drought, but this year has been very rainy. I’m not complaining, mind you, because with sights like Rainbow falls makes it all worthwhile. The weather here is cyclical. Some years a re dryer and some are wetter.

This is what Rainbow falls looks like when it’s not raining. The Wailuku river is always moving down Mauna Loa to Hilo Bay and out to sea. Normally, it rains overnight with some water gathering in the rain gauge. However, more days of heavy rain has been more common lately.

In Volcano News: Stunning video from above recently captured the eruption at Kilauea, which is continuing today, while a large earthquake that shook Hawaiʻi the day before has had no apparent affect on the island’s volcanic activity. Apparently, the continental plate either moved or collapsed or shifted by Seamount Lō’ihi.
